My ears hurt. My eyes are tired. The sound of the daily parade is becoming more than I can stomach. The marching band keeps playing the same song, over and over. Look, there comes another float! What does the banner say? “Look at me, I’m a Christian!”
I firmly believe that our founding fathers were men of faith. I also think that they were rolling over in their graves long before now. How could we be a nation in which a majority claim the name of Christ, yet remain idle for so long? A recent Barna poll revealed that almost 6 out of 10 adults had their lives “greatly transformed” by their faith. Really? Prove it.
How often do you see the cute bumper sticker on the car that states “Be Bold” or the ever so popular “fish”? How often do you run into someone that has a “calling” on their heart to be a missionary in another country, whenever they won’t walk next door and share Christ with their neighbor? Enough!
I’m reminded of a quote by Charles Spurgeon that may identify the ailment that has afflicted us as Christians:
“If your religion does not make you holy, it will damn you. It is simply painted pageantry to go to hell in.”
Maybe we shouldn’t be mad at the writers of Newsweek. After all, they report what they see through their own perspective. Maybe they are tired of watching the parade or the pageant as well. We shouldn’t have to plaster something to the car or tell others that we are Christians. We should, and MUST, show them through our actions.
Over 50 million babies killed through abortion…….show them.
Gay marriage being forced on a nation by a 3% minority…….show them.
God torn out of the school system…….show them.
Our religion does not make us holy…the love of Christ does. Please, regardless of the cost, remove yourself from the pageant. Step off of the stage and mingle in the crowd. The spotlight will not follow you, but that’s okay. After all…
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
-Matthew 5:16
We can shine together.
